Vista Outdoor Receives Environmental Quality Award at Lewiston, Idaho Facility
Click image to enlarge and download.Clearfield, Utah, October 22, 2015 - Vista Outdoor’s (NYSE: VSTO) Lewiston, Idaho facility was recently recognized as “Pollution Prevention Champions” by the Idaho Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ). The award was earned for the company’s successful efforts to reduce pollution at its CCI/Speer ammunition manufacturing facility.
“Vista Outdoor has utilized in-process recycling to great effect and has significantly reduced the amount of hazardous waste generated as a result. This has resulted in significant cost savings and long-term environmental benefits moving forward,” said Ben Jarvis, Pollution Prevention Coordinator for Idaho’s DEQ. “The company demonstrated how they incorporate pollution prevention into daily operations by reducing raw materials or toxic materials purchased; hazardous or solid waste generated; water, energy, or fuel used; or air pollutants emitted. They are a great example of how reducing waste can not only help the environment but also save a company money while meeting customers’ needs.”
The most recent pollution prevention achievement by the Lewiston facility has been the implementation of an in-process acetone recycling and recovery system. This system will allow the company to significantly reduce its hazardous waste generation and reduce the volume of acetone needed for production by over 15,000 gallons per year. By purchasing less solvent, the company is decreasing disposal volumes and reducing the risk of accidental releases into the environment - reducing risks to the environment and its workers. Solvents are ubiquitous in nearly every type of manufacturing operation from metal fabrication to food processing. The company made great strides improving the way solvents are used and managed while also cutting down on the need to transport waste.
